New Internet Scam: Be Careful Using Craigslist

One online shopper loses $3,500.00 in Craigslist scam.  It works like this.  You email a seller and the seller asks you to use a service called "Net Assistant Trader".  Essentially, the "service" is supposed to hold you money until you confirm that you are satisfied with the product you were to receive.  In theory this is a great idea, in practice, this is a true scam.  Once you transfer the money, you can consider it gone.  I would suggest doing your due diligence.  Always go to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) an look up the service in question.  Also, don't forget to use Google as well.  You'll be better prepared and less likely to be nailed to the wall or out some serious cash.

The Newly Designed Google

It appears that Google has decided to change their layout.  Truthfully, it is almost identical to their previous one, except now the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button is gone and the new search button is much more prominent.  Since I never used the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button as I never felt lucky, I don't guess I'll miss it.

From .COM to .InsertIdeaHere

It was bound to happen.  ICANN finally caved.  Soon you'll be able to get a domain at www.somesite.anythingyouwant.  ICANN President and CEO Rod Beckstrom stated "We hope this allows the domain name system to better serve all of mankind.  I guess regulating something is more burdensome and less profitable overall.  I guess we won't know if this is a good or bad thing until it is put into place.  Tell us what you think.

Website Design Prices: Why We Are Considered Under Priced

Just about every company we speak with asks us the same question:  How much will it cost for a website?

Since we have started up, we have dropped our prices well below market value in order to gain exposure and reputation; however, most of the time, if we were to state market value those companies would probably cringe.

As it turns out, most standard websites run about $1,000.00 - $1,500.00.  That doesn’t even include the domain name and hosting.  That is just for a fairly plain web site.  It will get you out there, but it won’t be any different from the five other companies just like yours in town.  Now, if you go to a nickel-and-dime web designer, you could get a much better price for sure.  That is because they’ll do it by purchasing a web template online and then changing it for what you asked.  Here is the kicker though, you might be using a copyrighted design or copyrighted images and not even know it until you get hit with a lawsuit, and yes, you are the liable party as it is your website!

Our Prices

When people ask us for a quote, we try to follow the same process.  We talk with them, discuss their needs, try to determine an expected timeline, and then provide an estimate of the build price.  Under normal circumstances, even if we work longer than the estimate, we do not charge more.  We really want to keep our customers.  Does this hurt us?  YES!  Does this help the customer?  YES!  We try to maintain a quality relationship with our customers.

Average web design rates vary from between $50.00 to $250.00 per hour depending on the company you go with.  One rule of thumb is that if the company is larger the bill is larger as they have to pay their employees, building leases, and more.  Most websites take at least twenty (20) hours to put together, and at $50.00 an hour, that is $1,000.00 spent.  We aren’t charging anywhere near that, and yet companies still cringe at our prices.  Amazingly, most companies can make back what they spend on our builds in days, rather that months or years, and yet the scoff at us as if we are charging too much.  I ask you to find a better price than what we offer.

So many elements go into create a website that most people just don’t understand.  Let’s assume that the domain and hosting already been handled, so that leave us with the following:
  • Theme and Design Layout
  • Logo Incorporation
  • CSS/XHTML
  • Graphical Image Production
  • Graphical Splicing for optimal CSS/XHTML structure
  • Flash / Java Creating For Spectacular Design

The reason you pay so much is to cover everything from the employees who actually can handle the above elements, the building costs, the utility bills, and more.

Since we are a new company to McAlester, we have been offering low-ball prices in order to gain business, but that will change.  These introductory prices that we offer will not stay, as it doesn’t make sense as a business to go under trying to be nice.  With that said we do offer website design and hosting and some of the lowest price around, if not the lowest.  We would love to handle your company website build!

So if you want a rate most people would call crazy, give us a call.  Well take good care of you.

Wipe 2011.09

The internet isn't a safe environment, hackers are monitoring passwords, cookies and browsing activities, which is why users need all the protection they can get. Privacy ( security ) software has been developed to keep users' personal information safe as they browse the internet, generally by allowing users to securely delete their internet tracks, remove junk files and shred sensitive computer data.

WIPE is a free, easy to use and powerful security tool that allows you to protect your privacy by clearing browser history and cache, cleaning index.dat files, securely removing cookies, safely deleting autocomplete history and temporary internet files and erasing any other tracks that you leave behind after having used your pc. Only the evidence of your activities, which is recorded and stored by your computer without your permission, is erased - no user documents are deleted!

Tracks preview
After the application starts you will see a screen listing all programs that may contain personal data you do not want to share. You can double click on any item in the list to see the number of files stored by the program and the amount of space each takes, e.g. view cookies, index.dat files etc.

You have the opportunity to deselect a program from being wiped or simply have all files securely deleted. Upon clicking the " Delete! " button, WIPE shows you a friendly screen displaying the icon of the program being cleaned, which specific file is being deleted, a tally of the number of files and amount of space being cleared and a graph showing you the remaining run time of the program.

WIPE has an additional built-in tool to protect your privacy: Screen Lock.
Try this software for free and discover the many invisible files in which Windows records your online and offline activities!

Smart program support
WIPE removes all traces of your online and offline activities in Windows XP / Vista / Windows 7, in the most popular browsers ( Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera ) and in many of your other, daily used, software programs.

WIPE comes with free monthly updates and regularly features new versions enabling it to recognize and erase usage tracks in newly released software.

No recovery!
WIPE incoporates US DoD 5220.22-M, Gutmann ( full 39 steps ) and Russian GOST algorithms to completely erase your personal and private data, making deleted usage tracks unrecoverable.

Kapersky TDSSKiller 2.5.5.0

A rootkit is a program or a program kit that hides the presence of malware in the system.  A rootkit for Windows systems is a program that penetrates into the system and intercepts the system functions (Windows API). It can effectively hide its presence by intercepting and modifying low-level API functions. Moreover it can hide the presence of particular processes, folders, files and registry keys. Some rootkits install its own drivers and services in the system (they also remain “invisible”).  Kaspersky Lab has developed the TDSSKiller utility that allows removing rootkits.

The utility supports 32-bit and 64-bit operation systems.
The utility can be run in Normal Mode and Safe Mode.

It detects and removes the following malware:
  • malware family Rootkit.Win32.TDSS;
  • bootkits;
  • rootkits.

How to disinfect a compromised system
  • Download the TDSSKiller.zip archive and extract it into a folder on the infected (or possibly infected) computer with an archiver (WinZip, for example);
  • Run the TDSSKiller.exe file;
  • Wait until the scanning and disinfection completes. A reboot might require after the disinfection has been completed.

RogueKiller 5.2.3.0

RogueKiller is a tool written in C, which scans the processes running, and kill those who are malicious. I developed this tool after seeing that some rogues (eg Security Tools) blocked the execution of disinfection programs, and some programs (eg Rkill) appeared ineffective in killing the rogue process. So I developed a tool based on speed of execution, which is to clean up the process and requested clean the registry to make a sanitizing faster and safer then with the usual tools.

User manual:

1: Download the desktop RogueKiller (link above)
2: Quit all running programs
3: On Vista / Seven, right click -> run as administrator
4: Otherwise just throw RogueKiller.exe
5: When prompted, type 1 and validate
6: When the report opens (RKreport.txt is also located next to the executable), save and give to the person who is helping you
7: If the program has been blocked, do not hesitate to try several times. If it really does not (it could happen), rename it to winlogon.exe

Notes:

** If a registry key has been detected, if you are sure it is up to Rogue, go to Mode 2. If you do not get help. In all cases, the infection process have been killed, you can disinfect quietly with more generic tools (eg Malwarebytes)
** If you notice that your HOSTS file is corrupt (HOSTS Section of the report), boost mode 3 RogueKiller to restore a clean copy
** If you notice any unwanted proxy, raise RogueKiller mode 4
** If you notice any unwanted DNS, restart RogueKiller mode 5
** If your shortcuts and folders on the desktop / start menu / etc have diparu, boost mode RogueKiller 6

10 Benefits Of Having A Website

1.   Cheaper And More Flexible Than Print Or Radio Advertising
The Internet is extremely different from print or radio advertising in that space is cheap, your advertisement is accessible for a longer period of time, the content can be changed without having to ask someone to do it for you and you can potentially reach a wider audience.

2. World Wide Presence
Breaking out of your local market has never been easier as a web site is available worldwide.  Now, where you were limited to your local market, the boundaries are removed and potential customers from around the world can see your site and what you offer.

3. Multiple Revenue Streams
A website is more than just an address on the internet, it is a representation of your company and also an advertising avenue where anyone can acquire information about your company, your products, and your services … anything that you want them to know.

4. Always Available Even When You Aren’t Open
Just because your store is closed doesn’t mean you can’t still help customers.  Now you can leave all the information about your store on your page like your office location, hours, and any special notices.

5. Convenience
The internet has made it easier for a person to research a product, saving them the hassle of having to travel somewhere to find out the same information.  A potential customer can visit your website whenever they want, without having to travel and waste time, and see your services and products without any distractions.

6. Increased Credibility
Properly designed websites give you the opportunity show potential customers what you have to offer, who you are, and so much more.  You can earn a potential customers trust and confidence with a properly designed website.  It is pretty standard for a potential customer to research the products or services before they actually make a purchase of any type.

7. Not Just A Brick And Mortar Store
Getting lost trying to find a place can be frustrating for a potential customer.  A lot of websites now publish directions on their website that connect to live maps where they can get exact directions to your store, helping to save them frustration and you a possible sale.

8. Growth
Ultimately, you are in business to make money, and a website offers you even more ways to draw in customers … and we know more customers generally turns into more money.

9. Communicative Marketing
Customers can quickly and easily give feedback on your product and/or marketing approach.

10. Market Research Without The Excess Costs
Adding features on your website such as visitor polls and online surveys help you understand what your customers like and do not like helping you to improve your products, services, or presence.

Facebook May Be Designing A New Photo Sharing App for iPhone

It appears TechCrunch has some "information" about an iPhone application from Facebook focused on photo sharing.  Nothing appears to be concrete at the moment, but generally when rumors start, it at least moves a company in that same direction if they weren't already going that way.

Here is an excerpt from TechCrunch:

"But again, the app looks amazing. We've heard that internally it is being called either "Hovertown" or "WithPeople". And while it looks like a stand-alone app right now, there are also signs that it could be eventually integrated into Facebook's main iPhone app - as well as the main site.

Either way, based on the images in front of us, the best way to think about it appears to be Path meets Instagram meets Color meets (Path's new side project) With - with a few cool twists. And obviously, it's built entirely on top of Facebook's massive social graph."

Spybot Search and Destroy Update June 15, 2011

If you are using Spybot S & D, a new update was released on June 15, 2011.  Make sure that you have the most current update today @ Spybot S & D

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behavior to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Spybot-S&D can also clean usage tracks, an interesting function if you share your computer with other users and don't want them to see what you have been working on. And for professional users, Spybot-S&D allows you to fix some registry inconsistencies and extended reports.

    • The utility can be run in Normal Mode and Safe Mode.

    It detects and removes the following malware:
    • malware family Rootkit.Win32.TDSS;
    • bootkits;
    • rootkits.

    How to disinfect a compromised system
    • Download the TDSSKiller.zip archive and extract it into a folder on the infected (or possibly infected) computer with an archiver (WinZip, for example);
    • Run the TDSSKiller.exe file;
    • Wait until the scanning disinfection completes. A reboot might require after the disinfection has been completed.
